Bunker Group

Jacksons Bommie at Fairfax Island, looking toward Lady Musgrave
The Capricorn Bunker/ Bunker Group of Islands and Reefs is a group of islands and reefs located off the Southern Queensland coast between latitudes 22'S and 24'S, stretching from Lady Elliott Island up to North Reef
This Southern-most section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, including 9 vegitated coral islands or cays, is possibly the most pristine of all the accessable sections of the reef, being at least 60 kilometers off shore and not affected by coastal runoff.
| The islands were formed from the ancient remains of animals and plants which once lived in the surrounding reefs. Our Dive Cruises may include visits to Fitzroy, Llewelyn and Boult Reefs, and Hoskyn, Fairfax, Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliott Islands (dependant on weather conditions and tides). |
 |
The Islands have had a colourful history, which includes stories of shipwrecks, guano mining, whaling and turtle soup industries and devestation by goat populations.

Many of the dive sites we dive today were first explored during the 1960's by George Christensen, who was one of the first people in this area to own scuba equipment. Considered crude by todays standards, not having either pressure or depth guages, George commented "I always knew when I was down to 20 metres, because that's the depth where the regulator would stop working!" |
Some of these dives sites include brilliant wall and drift dives along the edges of Fitzroy and Llewelyn Reefs, which feature caves and swim-throughs, and some magnificent bommies beside Boult Reef, Hoskyn Island highlighted by the sheer wonder of Jacksons Bommie at Fairfax Island.
